FRENCH COIN COLLECTING ?

Feudal Coins

A 'Denier' from the archbishopric of Vienne in the Dauphiné region,
Estimated at : 300 FRF

A Norman 'Denier' Struck for Richard I Before the conquest of England. Estimated at : 1 500 FRF

The king only had direct control over a small part of France and the dukes, counts, barons, bishops, towns also struck their own coins, also in silver. They are easily distinguished from royal coins because only the latter bear the title REX.
A 'Denier' of Richard the Lionheart for the Poitou region. Estimated at : 700 FRF A golden 'Cavalier' Of Francis II, duke of Brittany (MONNAIES V 1047) Sold at : 6 500 FRF
As no interest has been taken in these coins, the exact chronology and the variants are usually unknown, to say nothing of their real scarcity. The number of collectors is insignificant and should grow considerably with the imminent publication of a reference book which will replace, for coin-collectors, books from the 19th century, such as Boudeau (1895) and Poey d'Avant (around 1880).
A 'Gros' struck for the Dukedom of Luxembourg in 1385 Estimated at : 1500 FRF A 'Gros' with Saint Stephen standing up, Struck in Metz Between 1365 and 1383 by Thierry V. Bayer de Boppard.(MONNAIES V 943) Sold at : 1300 FRF
Feudal coins can be found from 50F upwards and only extremely rare or historically important specimens go up to ten thousand francs (two thousand dollars) .
