FRENCH COIN COLLECTING ?

19th century Coins

Two examples of the Art of the monetary portrait after Napoleon : the monetary system is maintained, as is the format of the coins.

Numismatics of the 1816/1914 period is structurally very close to American numismatics of the same period with series of bronze, silver and gold coins struck in various mints, the only difference being that, due to the fact of being poorly studied, their prices go from a tenth to a hundredth of the prices of their American equivalents. Different political regimes and revolutions followed one another, wars were won or lost, colonies… colonised, the economy was in full development, coins began to be struck on an industrial basis, with hundreds of thousands of identical examples being produced ; however the engravers were still chosen from amongst the great masters.

A 40-franc piece, struck by Charles X

The coins of this period are those used by Jules Vernes, Victor Hugo, Renoir, Cézanne, Degas, Monet, Van Gogh, Baudelaire and Rimbaud, they witnessed the first cars, the first photos and the first film. The coin that you have in your hand may have been held by Louis Pasteur, Claude Debussy or Pierre and Marie Curie. It may have paid the entry to the first production of Carmen by Georges Bizet.
Probably unique example of a test striking of a 5-franc coin of 1832

A gold 20-franc coin, struck by Louis-Philippe.

A 5-franc coin from the 2nd Republic struck in Paris in 1848 and which imitates the Dupré type From the Revolution. Example of the definitive type of 5-franc coin, of the 2nd Republic, struck in Paris in 1850.
For the first time in the numismatic history of France it is now possible to find, with relative ease, coins which are in better condition than MS60 (SUP 60), remarkable in Royal numismatics where an AU 50 (TTB 50) is often the best classified example.

The monetary portrait under Napoleon III

A 1-franc piece struck by Napoleon III

If it seems impossible to make unexpected discoveries with regards to the types and dates of coins of this period, there is however great variety in the engravers' marks, trial strikes and dies and they are far from being all classified.

A 20-centime piece of Napoleon III

A 20-franc piece of Napoleon III Estimated in this condition at : 1 000 FRF

A 5-centime piece of the 3rd Republic

The ecus presented on this page come from the A.D. collection, and we would therefore like to express our gratitude.
